When Will We See Your Likes Again?

Scotland's Eternal Soccer Tragedy

Found written on a bar napkin on the floor of a public house after Scotland lost to Hungary at the Euros 2024, to be eliminated from the tournament.

We will die like our faithers and mithers did before us; before Scotland ever finds the door to the next round. There is no point going on about the football play itself. There are no saviors, no answers, no hope. We will never arrive, endlessly traveling through the tragedy of football. To be a nation again, from the song the country sings at the top of the voice before the game, what nation is that? In previous times, before the kick off, the Scotland players on the field had to endure God Save The Queen being played, the national anthem of the United Kingdom. The Tartan Army drowned out that scourge with boos. And in some way, this motivated the team. We're not who you want us to be, and we were respected by other teams on the pitch. Now, the players and the nation sing a sad folk song for loss, some mist of history best left to episodes of Outlander and the tears of Braveheart. When will we see your likes again? Next time. When we are eliminated.
